Days on which I write a lot
I still track how many words I write in a day. I use the PhDometer for this purpose, and when I work on a different tool (such as my tablet), I use the word count feature in MS Word.
I tend to type quickly and write a fair amount – between emails, documents, papers, and other things that require typing.
And then there are days in which I write a whole lot. Over 10,000 words in some cases.
So, what happens when I write an insane amount? Here are a few things:
- Not a lot of meetings or teaching: Essentially, I write a lot when (obviously) I have the time to write.
- I write a lot when I’m drafting a paper or a report. Drafting is quickly, I edit later.
- Sometimes I use the dictation settings on Word 365 to save my fingers and get a lot of words onto the paper.
- Emails can quickly add up the number of words, so when I’m catching up on emails in the afternoon, the word count goes up quickly.
- Add in a blog post or two that I decide to write out (which is usually fast typing as well), and the word count climbs even further.
Granted, it is exceptional for me to get to 10,000 words in a day. I don’t even want to get that many words on paper most days (my joints would hurt too much), but there are days when I get to make a major step forward – and those days do count towards my overall output.
