Changing Roles In Committees

Changing roles in committees

My roles in technical committees have changed quite some over the past years:

  • Visitor: I started attending committee meetings as a visitor.
  • Associate member (or Friend): As most technical committees have tiers in membership, I started as an associate member or friend of the committee and volunteered to work on this.
  • Voting member: Typically, my efforts got noticed and resulted in becoming a voting member.
  • Leadership role: In certain cases, I moved up to a leadership position, as vice chair, secretary or chair of the committee. I am currently serving in leadership roles in various committees.
  • Creating opportunities: I am also coming up on the end of my term in a few committees, and for the first time, am also completing a leadership term. So, the final step in the cycle is to create opportunities for those who continue on with the committee work, and be available to help them out and advice whenever necessary.
